About Gift of Life Michigan

Gift of Life Michigan, headquartered in Ann Arbor, is the state’s only federally designated organ and tissue recovery program, providing all services necessary for organ donation to occur in Michigan. Founded in 1971, the non-profit organization provided a network for transplant surgeons to share kidneys; today, Gift of Life recovers more than 900 organs every year for transplantation from 300 or more donors, saving hundreds of lives.

The Need for a Solution

Gift of Life Michigan is currently performing transplant and tissue surgeries in hospitals and surgery centers throughout the state. To expand their mission of maximizing organ and tissue donation for transplantation, the organization wanted to develop their own Organ Procurement Center on-site at their location in Ann Arbor.

The Solution in Action

Gift of Life Michigan hired the team of Eckert Wordell and CSM Group to build their facility with a design-build approach, and then hired Compliance One to offer key components regarding code compliance, testing, inspections, and maintenance as the facility prepares to open in January 2016. To date, Compliance One has provided integral consultation on the design of the facility to adhere to Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) Physical Environment requirements, Facility Guidelines Institute requirements, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code-related sections. Although Gift of Life Michigan is not technically bound to adhere to all codes — based on its non-profit government status — the organization mandated that the facility incorporates the most stringent life safety, infection control, and staff safety code-related requirements.
